According to Le Monde, on May 30th, French law enforcement tracked down 1.7 million euros in cryptocurrency ransom related to the 2023 kidnapping case and linked it to a cross-border money laundering network spanning multiple countries. The ransom was paid in two installments, with funds flowing through several cryptocurrency wallets controlled by foreign nationals. Investigators traced $131k of the funds to a cryptocurrency wallet controlled by a Venezuelan citizen, revealing how the criminal network used cross-border cryptocurrency transfers and anonymous accounts for money laundering.
