I noticed that many people have gold but don’t know how to properly calculate their Zakat. Especially when the gold is of different karats like 21 or 18, the matter becomes more complicated. But in reality, the calculation is simple once you understand the steps.

First, Zakat on gold is obligatory for every Muslim who owns the legally required Nisab—meaning approximately 85 grams of pure gold. When a full Hijri lunar year passes over that amount, you are required to give 2.5% of its value. The key point here is that Zakat includes all forms of gold—whether it is ingots, gold jewelry made for saving, or even gold investments.

What confuses people is specifically how to calculate Zakat on 21-karat gold. This is because 21-karat gold is not 100% pure gold; it contains a certain percentage of other metals. 24-karat gold is 100% pure, but 21-karat contains only about 87.5% pure gold. That means if you have 100 grams of 21-karat gold, the amount of pure gold within it is only 87.5 grams.

The calculation is very easy: multiply the total weight by the purity percentage, then calculate 2.5% of the market value. For example, if you have 100 grams of 21-karat gold and the price per gram of pure gold is 400 riyals, then the calculation is: 100 × 0.875 = 87.5 grams of pure gold, value = 87.5 × 400 = 35000 riyals, Zakat = 35000 × 2.5% = 875 riyals.

The Nisab for 21-karat gold differs from 24-karat, of course. The basic Nisab is 85 grams of pure gold, but if you are dealing directly with 21-karat gold, you need approximately 97 grams in order to reach the Nisab. The difference is small, but it matters in the calculation.

The second important point: Zakat is obligatory whether the gold is jewelry for daily adornment or investment savings. There is a difference of scholarly opinion regarding jewelry used for decoration, but the general view is that there is no Zakat on it. However, if it is made for sale or saving, then Zakat is definitely due on it.

A fundamental point you must not forget: you only pay Zakat after completing a full Hijri lunar year. That means if you buy new gold, you must wait a full lunar year before calculating Zakat on it. But if you already had old gold and you combined it with the new gold, the Hijri year is counted from the time you owned the full amount.

The recipients of Zakat are the 8 categories Allah specified in the Qur’an: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect (Zakat), those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing slaves, those in debt, those in the cause of Allah, and the traveler. Do not give it to anyone other than these categories, no matter how close they are to you.

There are things you must not do: do not delay paying Zakat without a valid excuse, do not count it as part of old debts, do not pay it with the intention of voluntary charity or to show off, and do not pay it in a deficient amount. Zakat is a specific act of worship with precise rulings.

Finally, Zakat is not just a financial obligation. It is an act of worship that purifies the soul from miserliness and increases barakah in wealth, while achieving social solidarity among members of society. When you give it with a good heart, you feel reassurance and you know that you have fulfilled Allah’s right and the right of the poor from your wealth.
