I was talking with a friend of mine yesterday about the topic of Zakat, and I was surprised that many people are still unsure about how to calculate the Zakat on 24-karat gold and other karat types. The truth is, the subject is simpler than people think, but it requires a clear understanding of the nisab and the correct percentages.
First, Zakat is not just a financial obligation — it is an act of worship that purifies both the soul and the wealth. Allah Almighty said in His Noble Book: "Establish prayer and give Zakat" — which highlights its importance. Gold in particular has become a major focus because people invest in it as a protection against inflation.
Regarding the nisab, the minimum amount due is 85 grams of pure gold exactly. This figure is derived by scholars from the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). But what matters is that if you possess this amount or more, and a full lunar year passes over it, then you are obliged to pay Zakat.
Now, calculating the Zakat on 24-karat gold is very easy: take the total weight, multiply it by the purity percentage (24 karat = 100% purity), then take 2.5% of the market value. Simple formula: Zakat = 2.5% × market value of the pure gold.
Let me give you a practical example: if you have 100 grams of 24-karat gold, and the market price per gram is 400 SAR, then the calculation is: 100 grams × 1 (purity factor) = 100 grams of pure gold, worth 40,000 SAR. The due Zakat = 40,000 × 2.5% = 1,000 SAR. Very straightforward.
Of course, the process differs slightly with other karat types. 21-karat contains 87.5% pure gold, and 18-karat contains only 75%. If you have 100 grams of 21-karat gold at the same price, the pure gold content is 87.5 grams, which equals 35,000 SAR, and the Zakat = 875 SAR. The difference is clear, but the method remains the same.
An important point: Zakat applies to all forms of gold — whether bars, coins, or modern investments like gold ETFs and mining company shares. All of these are subject to Zakat.
Regarding who is eligible to receive Zakat, Allah has specified the eight categories in the Quran: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, to free captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the wayfarer. It is not permissible to give it to others outside these categories, nor even to relatives if they are not among them.
There are important precautions to avoid: do not delay Zakat without a valid reason, do not pay it from unlawful money, do not deduct it from old debts, and do not give it for show. Zakat is an act of worship solely for Allah’s sake.
Personally, I prefer to pay Zakat immediately after the lunar year completes, because it brings great barakah and purifies the wealth. The truth is, those who pay their Zakat willingly find blessing in their wealth and life in general. Zakat is not a burden; it is a spiritual and religious investment.
In summary: calculate the weight accurately, verify the karat, determine the purity, multiply by the current price, and take 2.5% of the result. Remember, when you pay Zakat, you are helping those in need and purifying your wealth at the same time.
