Praise be to Allah. I was thinking about the topic of Zakat on gold, and decided to share with you what I learned—especially since many people don’t have a clear idea about the matter.

First, Zakat is not just an ordinary Islamic obligation; it is a financial and spiritual act of worship that purifies both the soul and wealth. Allah, the Exalted, said: “Establish prayer and give Zakat and obey the Messenger.” Even though gold has long been a safe haven against inflation and crises, many people don’t know that we are required to pay its Zakat, whether it is savings or jewelry for adornment.

The key point: if you own 85 grams of pure gold (24 karats) and a full Hijri year passes over it, Zakat becomes due at 2.5% of its market value. The calculation is very clear: multiply the weight by the price per gram, then take 2.5% of the result.

But the thing that many people don’t pay attention to is that the gold Nisab varies depending on the karat. If you have 21-karat gold, the calculation is not exactly the same. Because 21-karat gold contains 87.5% pure gold, the Nisab for Zakat on 21-karat gold becomes about 97 grams, not 85 grams. This is because the purity percentage is lower.

Let me give you a practical example: if you have 100 grams of 21-karat gold and the per-gram price of pure gold is 400 Saudi riyals:
- Pure gold = 100 × 0.875 = 87.5 grams
- Total value = 87.5 × 400 = 35,000 Saudi riyals
- Zakat = 35,000 × 2.5% = 875 Saudi riyals

So you must be aware that Zakat is not limited to jewelry only. If you have gold bars, or even gold investment funds (ETFs), you must pay Zakat on them as well. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against neglecting Zakat severely, saying: “No owner of gold or silver who does not give its due will escape until, on the Day of Resurrection, sheets of fire are made for him.”

As for jewelry used for daily adornment, scholars differ on the ruling. The majority say there is no Zakat on it if you use it for ordinary decoration, but the Hanafi school says there is Zakat even if you wear it. The safest approach is to give it so that you stay on the safe side.

Zakat is paid to eight specific categories: the poor, the needy, those employed to administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage (in الرقاب), those who are in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the wayfarer (ابن السبيل). You should not give it to anyone other than them, nor to the Prophet’s family, nor to the wealthy, nor to non-believers, nor to those whose maintenance is required of you.

Most important: when you pay Zakat, do it from good (lawful) wealth, do not delay it without a valid reason, and give it with sincere intention purely for Allah. If you calculate the Nisab correctly and pay Zakat on time, insha’Allah blessings will be realized in your wealth and you will feel more at ease.

If you have any questions about calculating Zakat on gold or the different karats, I’m here to help. The matter isn’t complicated once you understand the fundamentals.
