In fact, many people are not fully aware of the rules and rulings regarding gold zakat, especially with the spread of investing in gold as a safe haven against inflation. The issue is basically simple but requires a bit of focus.

The first thing you need to understand: if you own gold and it reaches the nisab for gold zakat, meaning it reaches a certain weight, then you are obligated to pay zakat on it. The nisab for gold zakat is approximately 85 grams of pure gold. This is the minimum amount you must own for a full lunar year to be required to pay zakat.

The ruling here does not apply only to physical gold (jewelry and bars), but extends to other investment forms such as gold-backed exchange-traded funds and even shares of mining companies. Zakat is a comprehensive act of worship and is connected to all wealth that is capable of growth.

The calculation method is very clear: when your gold reaches the nisab and a full lunar year passes, you pay 2.5% of its market value. But here, you must pay attention to the purity. 24-karat gold is 100% pure, but 21-karat contains 87.5% pure gold, and 18-karat only 75%. So, to calculate correctly, multiply the total weight by the purity percentage, then apply the 2.5% rate to the result.

Take a practical example: if you have 100 grams of 21-karat gold and the price per gram of pure gold is 400 SAR, then the pure gold weight is 87.5 grams, which equals 35,000 SAR. The zakat would be 875 SAR. Simple as that.

But remember, the ruling varies depending on the intention and use. If the gold is for trade and investment, zakat is obligatory according to scholarly consensus. If it’s jewelry used daily for adornment, there is a difference of opinion among scholars, but the majority say there is no zakat on it. Men are generally not allowed to wear gold jewelry, but if they own it, zakat is obligatory.

The matter does not end with just the calculation. When you pay zakat, it should go to specific categories: the poor, the needy, those employed to collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing slaves, those in debt, in the way of Allah, and travelers. It should not be given to the rich, disbelievers, or those whose expenses you are responsible for, like family, spouses, and children. Zakat is a worship with specific purposes, and it is not permissible to spend it outside its prescribed channels.

There are also important things you should not forget: do not delay it without a valid excuse when it becomes obligatory, do not count it as an old debt, do not pay it as voluntary charity instead of the obligatory, and do not pay it from unlawful money. Zakat is a worship that has no room for deception or showing off.

In the end, understanding the nisab of gold zakat and committing to pay it is not just a religious duty, but a spiritual and moral investment. It purifies wealth from doubts, increases barakah, teaches generosity and giving, and helps reduce social inequalities. When a Muslim pays zakat willingly and sincerely, it makes his investment more blessed and benefits others.
