I've noticed that most beginners treat futures trading like a casino. They open positions hoping to turn $10-20 into a million, and end up losing their entire deposit. I understand the thrill, but this isn't investing; it's just roulette.
If you're just starting out, I seriously advise you not to touch futures at the beginning. Start with spot trading, gain experience, and learn how the market works. Then, when you're confident, you can move on to more complex instruments.
But here's what's interesting — futures are actually a useful tool if used correctly. We're talking about hedging. This isn't a game, but a protection strategy. So, what are futures in the context of hedging? They're a way to insure your investments against market declines.
Imagine you've bought 1 Bitcoin for $100,000 on the spot market. It's a good entry, but you're worried the price might fall. That's where hedging comes in. You open a short position on a futures contract with the same volume — 1 BTC. It's like insurance.
Scenario one: the price drops to $95,000. You lose $5,000 on the spot position. But on the futures contract, you earned exactly the same amount because you had a short position. The result — zero losses, the position is protected.
Scenario two: the price rises to $105,000. You make a $5,000 profit on the spot position. But on the futures, you lost $5,000 because of the same short position. Again zero, but your Bitcoin is safe and increasing in value.
This is the proper way to use futures. Not a guessing game, but a calculated protection. Of course, this requires knowledge and experience. You need to understand how contracts work, monitor the market, and manage risks.
My advice: start small, learn through spot trading, then gradually move to hedging. Regularly analyze the market, don't rely on luck. Invest wisely, and don't play roulette.
By the way, current prices are interesting. BTC is trading around $77.75k, BNB at $657.50, ADA at $0.25. If you're serious about hedging your positions, it's worth understanding the tools offered by Gate.
