Do you know the story that goes around the web every May 22nd? The one about Laszlo Hanyecz and his two pizzas that changed crypto forever.

It was in 2010. At the time, no one really knew what bitcoins were worth. Laszlo Hanyecz posted on a forum: "I will give 10,000 BTC for two pizzas." That’s it. It’s as simple as that. Another user said yes, ordered two Papa John’s pizzas, and had them delivered in Florida. Laszlo Hanyecz sent the bitcoins from his freshly created command-line online wallet.

Ten thousand bitcoins. For two pizzas.

At that moment, no one really realized what was happening. The 10,000 BTC were worth only a few hundred dollars. But here’s the thing—this was the first real commercial transaction with crypto. The first time someone used Bitcoin to buy something concrete, tangible. Not trading, not speculation. Just... two pizzas.

Fast forward to today. With BTC currently trading at $77,790, those 10,000 bitcoins would be worth about $778 million. Crazy. Laszlo Hanyecz literally ate one of the most expensive lunches in history.

Every May 22nd, the crypto community celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day. It’s become a kind of affectionate joke—a reminder of how far crypto has come in a decade and a half. But honestly? It’s also a moment to reflect. Does Laszlo Hanyecz have regrets? Probably. But he also created a historic moment without even knowing it. And that’s something no one can ever take away from him. 🍕
