I just found out that the Thai stock market doesn’t open in a fixed morning schedule. The actual opening time is randomly between 9.55 and 10.00 AM. At first, I thought it was strange, but once I understood, I realized it’s meant to prevent distortions of the opening price, so traders can’t game the opening price.

Before the morning session opens, there’s a pre-open period from 9.30 to 9.55 AM, during which the system collects buy and sell orders left over from the previous day. When it reaches 9.55, it enters a random 5-minute period before the actual open—this is the time when stock prices fluctuate the most, because there are so many pending orders.

When the morning market actually opens, trading runs from approximately 10.00 to 12.30 PM. After that, the market pauses for 1.5 hours, then the afternoon session continues from 14.30 to 16.30 PM. During the afternoon closing period, there’s also a pre-close from 16.30 to 16.35 PM, followed by a random closing time from 16.35 to 16.40 PM.

For those who like to speculate during the morning market open, the pre-open period and the random time of the actual open are the most important times, because prices will react to the morning news that affects underlying fundamentals. If you don’t know the exact opening time, you might miss important opportunities or enter a trade at the wrong time.

This is different from forex trading, where you can trade at any time. Since the Thai stock market has limited trading hours, knowing the precise morning opening time helps you plan each day’s trading more effectively.
