Do you know who the actual richest player in the world is? Well, it's not Cristiano Ronaldo like everyone thinks. I found out it's this guy named Faiq Bolkiah, nephew of the Sultan of Brunei, with an estimated fortune of 20 billion dollars. But like, this guy inherited everything from the royal family, it wasn't because of his football career.
The interesting thing is that among those who really got rich through the sport, there are quite different stories. Cristiano Ronaldo is in the hundreds of millions, with millionaire salaries, global sponsorships, and side businesses. Messi has around 400 million too, but with a more discreet profile. Now, Mathieu Flamini, a former Arsenal player, founded a bioproducts company and became a billionaire — like, he left football and went into business for real.
What caught my attention most is that the richest player in the world isn't always the highest-paid. In 2025, Cristiano Ronaldo is earning 220 million a year just in salary at Al-Nassr, plus 65 million in advertising. Messi at Inter Miami is making about 135 million. But that's annual income, not accumulated net worth.
The clubs also got crazy rich. Real Madrid leads with 6.6 billion dollars, Manchester United with 6.5 billion. It’s like a billion-dollar industry now, where football stopped being just passion and turned into a real business. The owners? Sovereign funds from Saudi Arabia, billionaires, royal families — people injecting heavy capital to turn teams into global brands.
There are things you just can't understand: how can someone be the richest player in the world without being well-known? Faiq Bolkiah is practically invisible, but he's a millionaire. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo is a global celebrity and far from the richest. Modern football is just weird like that.
