I looked at the list of the poorest countries in the world in 2025, and it's quite striking. South Sudan ranks first with a GDP per capita of only $251, clearly making it the poorest country in the world right now. Then Yemen at $417, Burundi at $490... most are in Sub-Saharan Africa.

What surprised me while scrolling through the list is how huge the gap is. Meanwhile, there are countries with thousands of dollars per capita. South Sudan, Yemen, the DRC... these countries are the poorest in the world, really struggling with incomes barely exceeding $250-$800 annually per person. It's crazy when you put it into perspective.

The data also shows that the majority of the 50 poorest countries are in Africa. Haiti in Latin America, Bangladesh and Nepal in South Asia, but clearly the African continent concentrates the largest share of extreme poverty. It highlights the real economic disparities that exist.
