I just came across some interesting on-chain data, and the name Hal Finney is trending again. This early Bitcoin developer’s wallet has recently taken some new actions, transferring some BTC to an exchange, which has sparked a lot of discussion in the community.

Who is Hal Finney? If you’ve been in the crypto space for a few years, this name probably won’t be unfamiliar. He wasn’t only the first person to receive Bitcoin, but also one of Bitcoin’s earliest developers. On January 11, 2009, @SatoshiNakamoto@ sent him 10 BTC, and at the time he posted a tweet, “Running Bitcoin,” which became the first public online discussion about Bitcoin. Because of this history, many people have long believed that Hal Finney might be @SatoshiNakamoto@.

This cryptography expert had been involved in developing PGP encryption technology as early as the 1990s, and later was also one of the earliest developers to engage with the Tor network. What’s even more interesting is that in 2021, Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas even tweeted that he believed Hal Finney was @SatoshiNakamoto@. He also dug up an article Hal Finney published in 1993, which somehow mentioned the idea of creating encrypted collectible cards—an idea that is almost identical to today’s NFTs.

However, this mystery may never be fully solved. Hal Finney died of ALS in 2014 at the age of 58. During his lifetime, he gave an exclusive interview to Forbes, and when asked whether he was @SatoshiNakamoto@, he denied it directly in person. But in any case, Hal Finney’s contributions to the crypto world are beyond doubt—something no one can dispute.

Recently, regarding activity from his wallet, some people have speculated that his family may be the ones operating it. It’s said that Hal Finney had once mentioned that the private key for this address was stored in a safe during his lifetime, to be left to his children. Over the past few months, roughly 30 million USD worth of BTC has been transferred out from his wallet, which also reflects just how many Bitcoins he had accumulated back then. There are still more than 1,000 BTC in his wallet now, and that fortune is an astronomical amount to anyone.

Hal Finney’s story reminds us that the pioneers of the crypto world changed the entire financial landscape with their real-world actions. Their vision and persistence paved the way for us today.
