Let’s learn about 【Air Force One】
✈️Air Force One (Air Force One) is the official radio call sign for the U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the President of the United States.
Strictly speaking, any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the sitting U.S. president uses this call sign during flight, but it is commonly used to specifically refer to the two highly customized Boeing 747-200B presidential aircraft (military designations VC-25A, tail numbers 28000 and 29000).
✅History
Early: The U.S. presidential air travel began in the 1940s. President Franklin D. Roosevelt first flew in 1943 (commercial Boeing 314), and in 1945, he used a modified Douglas C-54 “Sacred Cow” to attend the Yalta Conference.
Origin of call sign: In 1953, during President Eisenhower’s term, to avoid conflicts with civilian airline call signs, the dedicated call sign “Air Force One” was introduced.
Jet age: Starting in 1962, Boeing 707 (VC-137) was used. During Kennedy’s era, designer Raymond Loewy created the iconic blue and white livery (with “United States of America” lettering, the American flag, and presidential emblem), which remains to this day.
Current models: Two VC-25A aircraft were delivered between 1990-1991 and are still in service, having served multiple presidents.
New model updates: The U.S. Air Force has ordered two VC-25B aircraft based on Boeing 747-8 as replacements, with delivery expected around 2028. Currently, a modified Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar is used as a “bridge” temporary aircraft.
✅Main specifications and capabilities (VC-25A)
Size: Approximately 70 meters long (231 feet), wingspan about 59 meters, height around 19 meters (equivalent to six stories).
Power: Four turbofan engines, cruising speed about Mach 0.92 (around 1,000 km/h).
Range: Over 12,000 kilometers, capable of aerial refueling for “infinite” endurance, able to stay airborne for days.
Payload: Up to 76 passengers + 26 crew members, able to carry the presidential team, special agents, journalists, etc.
Base: Stationed at Andrews Joint Base in Maryland, the president usually transfers from the White House lawn via “Marine One” (helicopter).
✅Interior facilities (“Airborne White House”)
The aircraft interior has been fully renovated and is fully functional:
Presidential suite: Private bedroom, bathroom, office, and conference area.
Command and communication: Advanced encrypted communication systems, 87 telephones (some with anti-eavesdropping), satellite video, computers, etc., capable of commanding nationwide and even nuclear strikes from the air.
Medical facilities: Operating room, foldable surgical table, full medicines, capable of emergency surgery.
Logistics: Two kitchens can serve 100 people simultaneously (with pre-purchased ingredients), multiple rest areas, journalist zones, conference rooms.
✅Others: Fitness facilities, showers, etc., essentially everything the president can do on land can be done in the air.
✅Security (the “Flying Fortress”)
- Capable of resisting nuclear explosion EMPs and shockwaves.
- Advanced missile defense systems, infrared decoy missiles, electronic jamming equipment. The fuselage is reinforced, with strict security checks.
It can serve as a mobile command center, maintaining government operations in national emergencies.
🇺🇸 Air Force One is not just a mode of transportation but also a symbol of presidential power and a display of national strength. It has witnessed many historic moments, such as transporting President George W. Bush safely back to Washington during the 9/11 attacks. The two aircraft are usually one primary and one backup, ensuring availability at all times.
