I took a look at the per capita GDP figures for 2025, and it's quite striking to see the gap between the world's poorest countries. South Sudan tops this sad list with only $251 per person, followed by Yemen at $417. It's really hard to imagine.

What surprised me is that most of the world's poorest countries are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa. We find Burundi, the DRC, Niger, Somalia... all with figures below $800. Madagascar, Mozambique, the DRC at $743, Niger at $751. That's a huge contrast to what we know in Europe or developed Asia.

But it's also interesting to note that some Asian countries appear on this list of the poorest countries in the world: Myanmar at $1,177, Nepal at $1,458, Cambodia at $2,870. Haiti also remains very low at $2,672. These data really highlight global economic inequalities.
