I discovered something interesting while looking at the ranking of the most expensive cities in the world. Apparently, Switzerland completely dominates the top - Zurich, Geneva, and Basel occupy the top three spots. Zurich comes in first with an index of 112.5, which means it's about 12% more expensive than New York. Crazy.
The cool thing is that they use New York as a reference at 100 points. So if a city exceeds 100, it's more expensive, and below, it's cheaper. Basically, New York is only seventh on the list of the most expensive cities in the world, which says a lot about Switzerland.
On the U.S. side, several cities are in the top 25 - Honolulu, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston. It's mainly real estate costs that drive prices up, especially in tech areas. Even Los Angeles and San Diego are part of the list of the most expensive cities in the world.
In Asia, Singapore and Tel Aviv stand out with the best cost of living scores according to the data. But honestly, the ranking of the most expensive cities in the world is clearly dominated by Switzerland - six Swiss cities in the top six! Geneva hosts the UN and WHO, which partly explains why it's so expensive. Basel is a pharma and biotech hub. Each time, it's linked to wealthy sectors and high salaries that balance out expenses a bit. Interesting to see how geography and local economy shape these costs.
