There is a guy who is truly changing the game in Africa, and few are talking about it properly. Ibrahim Traoré, president of Burkina Faso at just 36 years old, is one of the most interesting leaders to emerge on the continent in recent times. His trajectory is almost a manual of geopolitical rupture.
With a background in geology and former artillery officer, Traoré spent years witnessing the situation collapse in the most conflict-ridden areas of the north of the country. He saw terrorism advance while billions in international aid arrived without solving anything. Then comes the obvious question no one wanted to answer: why did foreign troops stay while attacks increased? Why did mineral wealth only benefit foreign companies?
In September 2022, Traoré made the decision that many only think about: he led a coup that ousted Paul-Henri Damiba. And here’s the key difference – in just a few months, he not only consolidated power but expelled French armed forces, ended military agreements that lasted decades, and revoked concessions from French NGOs and media. “Burkina Faso needs to be free,” was practically the motto.
What comes next is even more significant. Traoré completely reconfigured foreign policy. Bilateral agreements with Russia, China, and Iran became a priority – partnerships that do not impose subordination. Russian Gazprom is already exploring a newly discovered oil reserve, and the plan is ambitious: Burkina Faso will not only extract but refine and export derivatives. China is betting on infrastructure and technology, without heavy military presence.
What Ibrahim Traoré is doing is basically rewriting the rules of the African geopolitical game. It’s not just about expelling Western influences – it’s about building real alternatives. This will likely inspire other regional leaders to question the status quo as well.
