I looked at the ranking of the poorest countries in the world in 2025 and honestly, it's quite shocking. South Sudan ranks first with a GDP per capita of only $251 a year. It's crazy when you think about it.

Looking at the full list, we see that the poorest country in the world isn't alone in this situation. Yemen follows with $417, then Burundi at $490. Most of the countries at the bottom of the ranking are in Africa, with a few exceptions in South and Pacific Asia.

What struck me was the huge gap. Even when moving up the ranking, you still find countries with ridiculous incomes. Bangladesh, India, and Ivory Coast round out the list with about $2,800–$2,900 per capita. And we're already talking about the 50 poorest countries.

It really gives a perspective on global economic inequalities. Hard not to think about development challenges when you see these figures.
