I looked at the list of the poorest countries in the world based on GDP per capita in 2025, and it's really striking to see the gap. South Sudan ranks first with only $251 per person, followed by Yemen at $417 and Burundi at $490. It's crazy how these numbers put into perspective the economic reality of certain regions.

Looking at the list more broadly, we see that the majority of the poorest countries are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa. the DRC, Niger, Somalia, and Nigeria also appear in the top 10 with the lowest GDP per capita. Even slightly higher in the rankings, there are still countries like Rwanda, Tanzania, or Uganda with figures below $1,500.

What strikes me is that even in 2025, some of the world's poorest countries have hardly made any progress. Nations like Haiti, Bangladesh, or India remain among the lowest with respectively $2,672, $2,689, and $2,878 per capita. This really shows the structural challenges these economies must overcome.
