Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA details, especially with the December payments coming up. Spent some time figuring this out, so thought I'd share what I learned.

So if you're on permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), changing your banking details is a whole thing - can't do it online unfortunately. You've got to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID, a recent bank statement (less than 3 months old), and fill out their payment method change form. They'll verify everything and send it to the bank, which takes about 3 weeks. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect that same month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.

Now, if you're on the SRD grant, it's way smoother. The whole SRD grant bank details update process is online through their portal - you just enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you can update your banking details from there. Takes a few days to a week for the bank to verify. Just make sure whatever account you're using is actually in your name, or SASSA won't touch it.

For the cellphone number side of things, permanent grant holders need to visit an office or call their helpline (0800 60 10 11). But SRD users can do it online too - same portal, enter your ID and application number, they'll text you an OTP to verify, and boom, done. Honestly the SRD update process is so much faster than the permanent grants system.

One thing that caught me off guard: there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Don't fall for that. Always use the official portal or go in person. Also if you're using the cash send option instead of bank transfer, your phone number has to be registered in your name (RICA-compliant), so keep that in mind.

Anyone else had issues getting their SRD grant bank details update processed, or was it smooth sailing for you?
