On April 28th, the People’s Bank of China Shanghai Headquarters held the second quarter 2026 press conference, introducing the Shanghai financial operation situation in the first quarter of this year. Xin Ran, Deputy Director of the Financial Services Department at the Shanghai Headquarters of the People’s Bank of China, said in response to a question from The Paper that the Shanghai Headquarters of the People’s Bank of China, on the basis of consolidating and optimizing existing work results, actively explores and continues to make efforts, organizing various payment service providers to align with Shanghai’s key work deployments such as boosting consumption and promoting inbound tourism, further improving the payment acceptance environment for key scenarios. Xin Ran stated that the Shanghai Headquarters, together with the Municipal Financial Office, coordinated with the Digital Currency Research Institute of the People’s Bank of China, China UnionPay, major international card organizations, major banks, and Shentong Metro to fully promote the Shanghai Metro card swiping project. On June 14, 2025, they pushed for the launch of bank card and digital renminbi hardware wallet swiping functions at the Shanghai Maglev line pilot. On June 28, 2025, the pilot was expanded to the entire Shanghai rail transit network, allowing domestic residents and international travelers to use UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB bank cards, and digital renminbi hardware wallets to swipe and pass through Shanghai Metro gates.
