Have you ever seen the term 'hopium' on the crypto timeline? I was also initially confused about what it meant until I finally understood that it's a slang term quite commonly used in online communities.
So, hopium is a blend of the words 'hope' and 'opium.' Imagine it as a fictional drug you can take when you need hope. But in the crypto world, hopium is a term to describe investors who have unclear and unfounded hopes. For example, someone still believes that a dead coin will bounce back and go to the moon. That's very hopium.
The difference from 'copium' is, many people get confused. Copium is more about a coping mechanism to face bad situations, but hopium specifically refers to unrealistic hope. Both have a negative connotation, but their contexts are different.
When used in communities, hopium is a way to roast people who are blindly optimistic. There's an element of mockery involved. I often see in crypto groups:
Need some hopium for the degen
Wen BTC 100k? Hopium again
Such sentences usually appear when the market is bearish and people start coping while hoping. So, basically, hopium is about unrealistic hope, and this term is used to show that investors might be blinded by denial of the market reality.
