U.S. Defense Secretary: Will ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, warning Iran not to attack commercial shipping
BlockBeats News, May 5th, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth commented on the Middle East situation, stating that the U.S. is taking action to ensure the safety of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and emphasized that they are not seeking conflict but are prepared to respond.
Hegseth said that the U.S. President has directed CENTCOM to restore commercial freedom of navigation through the strait, and currently U.S. merchant ships have completed passage with the assistance of U.S. warships, keeping the channel open. Meanwhile, hundreds of ships are queued to pass.
He pointed out that Iran has long harassed shipping and attempted to “weaponize” key shipping routes for economic gain, calling such behavior “unacceptable.” Hegseth warned that if Iran attacks commercial shipping, it will face an “overwhelming firepower response.”
Additionally, he stated that the U.S. is maintaining close communication with allies, shipping companies, and insurance agencies to stabilize the situation, and called on the international community to jointly bear responsibility for shipping security at the appropriate time.
