Brazil Central Bank Bars Crypto From Regulated Cross-Border Payment Rails

Banco Central do Brasil published Resolution BCB No. 561, barring virtual assets from settlement in Brazil’s regulated eFX cross-border payment channel. The rule requires eFX providers and foreign counterparts to settle through a foreign exchange transaction or a movement in a non-resident Brazilian real account instead of crypto. Transitional eFX providers may keep operating only if they apply for authorization by May 31, 2027. The measure does not amount to a blanket ban on crypto transfers in Brazil.
