A few years ago, the crypto community went through one of those moments that still sparks debate. Nikolai Mushegian, an important figure in the ecosystem and co-founder of MakerDAO, was found dead on Condado Beach in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in October 2022. What surrounded his death has kept speculation alive to this day.
The hours leading up to his death were particularly strange. Mushegian had posted quite disturbing tweets talking about intelligence agencies, human trafficking networks, and what he perceived as direct threats against his life. Then, hours later, he was found on the beach with a small laceration on his skull.
Local authorities concluded there was no sign of foul play. The area is known for its dangerous currents, and there have been several drownings there before. Case closed, they said. But in the crypto community, many did not see it that way.
What’s interesting is that those who knew him described Nikolai Mushegian as a brilliant person but one who had faced mental health issues. Some colleagues, like Brock Pierce, suggested it could have been self-inflicted. Others simply found the circumstances suspicious. The timing of his last tweets, the nature of the claims, all fueled conspiracy theories.
To this day, nearly four years later, Mushegian’s death remains a topic of conversation in certain circles. It’s not that there is new evidence or open investigations, but the crypto community remembers. Some cases just don’t close well in the collective mind, and this is one of them. The true cause remains a matter of debate, and it probably will continue to be.
