Just read about this wild case - Cameron Redman, a 22-year-old Canadian, just got sentenced to a year in prison for pulling off some seriously sophisticated crypto scams. The guy and his crew hacked into X accounts of major influencers like Beeple and Gary Vaynerchuk, then posted fake giveaway links that led to phishing sites. Over 200 people got hit, losing nearly $800k in crypto and NFTs.
The scam was pretty clever - victims thought they were confirming a transaction to claim NFTs, but they were actually handing over their wallet access. Redman's group then just cleaned out their accounts. What's crazy is this isn't even his first rodeo - dude was already locked up for stealing over $40 million in a SIM swap attack. Courts literally called him a 'sophisticated, successful, and repeat cybercriminal.'
Makes you think about how much damage one person can do with basic hacking skills and a little social engineering. The whole thing shows why you gotta be paranoid about clicking links from even verified accounts these days.
