U.S. Central Command: Will Provide Missile Destroyers and Fighters for Strait of Hormuz Operations
BlockBeats News, May 4 — The U.S. Central Command announced on May 4 that the military will begin supporting “Freedom of Action” on May 4 to restore the freedom of navigation of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. This mission, ordered by the President, aims to provide support to merchant vessels seeking freedom of passage through this important international trade route.
One-quarter of global maritime oil trade, as well as large quantities of fuel and fertilizer products, are transported through this strait. Central Command Commander General Brad Cooper said: “While we maintain a maritime blockade, supporting this defensive mission is vital for regional security and the global economy.”
Last week, the U.S. State Department announced a new initiative in collaboration with the Department of Defense, aimed at strengthening coordination and information sharing among international partners to support maritime security in the strait. The “Freedom of the Seas” concept is intended to combine diplomatic actions with military coordination, which will be crucial during “Freedom of Action.” U.S. military support for “Freedom of Action” will include missile destroyers, more than 100 land-based and sea-based aircraft, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and 15,000 personnel.
