Just looked at the latest cost of living rankings and it's pretty wild how much Switzerland dominates. Zurich, Geneva, and Basel basically own the top spots as the most expensive place to live in the world right now. We're talking 112.5, 111.4, and 110.7 on the index where NYC is the baseline at 100. That means Zurich is like 12% more expensive than New York just to exist there.

What's interesting is how the US shows up too. NYC obviously hits 100 as the benchmark, but then you've got Honolulu, San Francisco, Seattle all ranking pretty high on the most expensive place to live in the world list. Tech hubs are brutal for cost of living. Even LA and San Diego made the top 25.

Beyond the usual suspects, Norway's got multiple cities creeping up there, and Singapore's sitting at 85.3. The index basically takes housing, food, transportation, utilities, and entertainment into account. So if you see a city at 112, it's roughly 12% pricier than New York across the board.

Swiss salaries are insane though - averaging like CHF 7,000-9,000 monthly, which helps explain why people stay in what's literally the most expensive place to live in the world. Different story if you're making local wages elsewhere. Europe's still leading the pack overall, but it's pretty clear if you want cheap living, these aren't the spots to land.
