If you want to understand cryptocurrency and blockchain not just through charts, then movies about cryptocurrency are a great way to dive into this topic. I’ve noticed that in recent years, filmmakers have seriously taken on this space, and a lot of worthy content has appeared.
I'll start with thrillers. Crypto (2019) is a crime drama about a Wall Street banker who accidentally uncovers a huge money laundering conspiracy involving organized crime. Tense and exciting. If you want something lighter, Bitcoin Heist (2016) is a Vietnamese film about a group of thieves hunting a cybercriminal. A mix of action and comedy, like Ocean’s 11, but in the crypto world.
Documentaries here are top-notch. Trust Machine (2018) by director Alex Winter is not just about blockchain; it’s about how this technology can revolutionize finance and charity. Deep immersion, really interesting. The Rise of Bitcoin (2014) tells the story from the first-person perspective — miners, investors, early believers. Shows what they went through while others laughed. Banking on Bitcoin (2016) is good as an introduction to the industry’s regulatory challenges and issues.
There are also more specialized projects. Crypto Race (2020) focuses on women in the crypto space and the impact of blockchain on various industries — an inspiring look. Bitcoin: Beyond the Bubble (2018) asks the main question — is the speculative bubble or the future of money? The Bitcoin Gospel (2015) delves into philosophy; even Roger Ver participates, talking about the values driving the community.
The TV series StartUp (2016-2018) is really worth watching. The story of creating the digital currency GenCoin in the criminal environment of Miami. Tense drama blending technology and crime. For fans of real stories, there’s Don’t Trust Anyone: The Hunt for the Crypto King (2022) on Netflix — about the mysterious death of QuadrigaCX CEO, who left $250 million in frozen funds. A real crypto mystery that’s both captivating and frightening.
There are also more experimental films about cryptocurrency. Deciphered (2021) is a black comedy about a government team trying to find Satoshi Nakamoto. Funny and intriguing at the same time. Open Money (2020) is a documentary series about Dragonchain and their fight with regulators.
What do all these projects have in common? They show crypto not as a boring fintech topic, but as a living, contradictory phenomenon. From action to philosophy, from documentary realism to fictional thrillers — everyone will find something for themselves. If you’re an enthusiast, investor, or just curious about where all this is heading, this list will give you different perspectives.
What would you watch first? I’d start with Trust Machine if you want to understand the technology, or with Don’t Trust Anyone if you need adrenaline. What other movies about cryptocurrency can you recommend?
