Just checked out the latest cost of living rankings and it's wild how dominated most expensive cities in the world are by Switzerland. Like, six of the top six spots? All Swiss cities. Zurich leads at 112.5, which means you're paying about 12.5% more just to live there compared to New York. Geneva and Basel follow right behind. I get it though - these are major financial and tech hubs with solid salaries to match, but still.
What caught my attention is how the rankings work. They use NYC as the baseline at 100 points, so anything above that is pricier, anything below is cheaper. Pretty straightforward way to compare. The index factors in housing, food, transportation, utilities, and purchasing power for each city.
The US has a bunch of entries too - New York at 100 obviously, then Honolulu, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston all scattered through the list. Makes sense given the tech industry driving up costs in places like SF and Seattle. Even LA and San Diego made the top 25.
What's interesting is how most expensive cities in the world tend to cluster by region. Europe dominates with Switzerland leading the charge, Norway's got several cities up there, and in Asia you've got Singapore, Tel Aviv, and Hong Kong representing. But honestly, if you're looking at the absolute priciest places to settle down, you're basically looking at Switzerland. The salaries are high too - Zurich averages 7,000 to 9,000 CHF monthly - but the cost of living still hits hard. Makes you think about where the real value is in this world.
