Today’s Sharing: I hope every parent reads these contents carefully! Because in China, 26k young children lose their lives each year due to accidents!
For common accidents among children aged 1-6, here is a prevention checklist for at home and nearby. Children at this age are curious, develop motor skills quickly, but have no danger prediction ability at all.
1. Prevent Drowning (the leading cause of death)
· Dangerous in the bathroom: Bathtubs, buckets, basins—even water only 5 centimeters deep can cause drowning.
· ✅ Never leave children alone in the bathroom, even if the water is shallow.
· ✅ Empty the bathtub and buckets immediately after use, and invert them for storage.
· ✅ Always close the toilet lid and install child safety locks.
· Other areas at home: Fish tanks, landscape ponds, even washing machines (some children climb inside).
· ✅ Place fish tanks on high shelves out of children’s reach or cover them.
· ✅ Unplug the washing machine when not in use, close the lid (or activate child locks).
2. Prevent Falls (balconies/windows/furniture)
· Windows and balconies: These are high-risk points for fatal falls.
· ✅ Install protective barriers (security screens) with gaps no more than 10 centimeters on windows and balconies.
· ❌ Never place beds, sofas, stools, or any climbable furniture near windows.
· Furniture tipping over: Unsecured drawers, bookshelves, which children may climb and get trapped under.
· ✅ All cabinets taller than 60 centimeters must be fixed to the wall with expansion screws (especially IKEA-style drawer cabinets).
· ❌ Do not place TVs on unstable low cabinets or tall cabinets.
3. Prevent Choking/Swallowing Foreign Objects
· Small items: Button batteries, magnetic beads, screws, coins, marbles, desiccants.
· ✅ When buying toys, confirm there are no small detachable parts (use a “small parts test tube”).
· ✅ Button batteries are especially dangerous; swallowing them can quickly burn the esophagus, seek medical attention immediately.
· Food: Whole grapes, jelly, nuts, large hot dogs.
· ✅ Cut grapes and cherry tomatoes into quarters before giving; try to avoid or mash jelly.
· Plastic bags/balloons: Covering the head or inhaling can cause suffocation.
· ✅ Tie plastic bags before discarding, do not let children play with them.
4. Prevent Burns and Scalds (kitchen/water dispensers/tablecloths)
· Kitchen hazards: Kettles, hot pots, rice cookers’ vents, stove knobs.
· ✅ Install protective covers on stove knobs; place hot containers like rice cookers deep inside cabinets.
· ✅ Keep pot handles inward, not hanging outside.
· Dining room risks: Thermos bottles, hot soup bowls, tablecloths (pulling one may pull the whole table of hot soup).
· ❌ Use no long tablecloths, opt for non-slip mats instead.
· ✅ Place thermos bottles on high shelves out of children’s reach or lock them in cabinets.
5. Prevent Vehicle-Related Accidents (garage/road blind spots)
· Inside the community: SUVs, trucks, vans reversing have front/side blind spots, and children about 1 meter tall are hard for drivers to see.
· ✅ Always hold children’s wrists in parking lots and entrances (don’t just hold their fingers, as they can slip away).
· On the road: Suddenly running into the street, playing near cars.
· ✅ Teach “Stop, Look, Listen” from age 2, but don’t rely solely on that; the core is always holding hands and supervision.
A quick reference chart (posted on the fridge or door)
Type | Most Overlooked Danger Point | 1-Minute Check Action
---|---|---
Drowning | Water in bathtubs, buckets | Empty buckets immediately after bathing
Falls | Low stools, beds near windows | Remove all climbable objects near windows
Choking | Button batteries, magnetic beads | Check remote controls, calculators for secure battery covers
Burns/Scalds | Rice cooker vents, thermos bottles | Move hot containers at least 30cm away from stove edges
Blind spots | Community parking garages, reversing vehicles | Always hold children’s wrists when entering/exiting garages
Final heartfelt advice: Never leave any “accident prevention” work to a child under 6, because their prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed and they truly cannot “remember dangers.” The most effective protection is always adult environment modification + continuous supervision.
Remember! May all children grow up healthy and safe!
