Just read that Gilbert Armenta – Ruja Ignatova's ex-boyfriend – is getting five years in prison for money laundering $300 million from that massive OneCoin scam. Honestly wild how deep he was involved in this. The guy literally bought a jet plane and a bank with stolen funds, then tried to sell the jet to cover his tracks. Pretty desperate move.
For context, OneCoin was this insane Ponzi scheme that pulled in over $4 billion before it collapsed. People were buying "educational packages" for like 100 to 118k euros, getting tokens in return that supposedly could be traded on an internal marketplace. Spoiler alert – the whole thing was fake. Multiple countries warned about it, but people kept investing anyway.
The craziest part? Ruja Ignatova, the founder, is still missing. Last spotted in Athens back in 2017. She's on the FBI's ten most wanted list with a $100k reward for info on her. Some intelligence guy thinks she might be dead, but there's also this theory she's hiding on a yacht somewhere in the Mediterranean. Earlier this year, a $15 million penthouse in London that she bought years ago showed up on the market again – which had people wondering if she's still alive and moving assets around.
Gilbert Armenta originally faced seven years but got the sentence reduced after pleading guilty. His lawyer tried the whole "he was manipulated by a toxic relationship" angle, claiming Ignatova basically stalked him and controlled his life. Whether that's true or just a defense strategy, hard to say. The real question everyone's asking now is whether Ruja Ignatova will ever actually face justice or if she's permanently disappeared with a chunk of that $4 billion.
