For years, the crypto community has been talking about what happened to Nikolai Mushegian. This guy was a co-founder of MakerDAO, a key figure in the development of DeFi protocols. In October 2022, he was found dead on a beach in Puerto Rico, and since then, questions about what really happened keep emerging.

What drew the most attention was the timing. Hours before being found, Mushegian had posted a series of quite disturbing tweets talking about intelligence agencies, human trafficking networks, and extortion. He mentioned the CIA, Mossad, and made strong accusations. Later, he was found on Condado Beach with a small head wound.

Local authorities said there were no signs of foul play, that it was probably a drowning. The area is known for its dangerous currents, and there have been other similar incidents. But, well, we know how this works on social media: when something looks weird, people speculate.

Close friends confirmed that Nikolai had been dealing with mental health issues, something his colleagues noticed. Some, like Brock Pierce, suggested it might have been self-inflicted. Others simply found the circumstances too suspicious to ignore.

To this day, Mushegian’s death remains a topic of debate in crypto. Conspiracy theories circulate, people question the timing of those last tweets, analyze every detail. The official investigation concluded something, but for many in the community, the true story has never been entirely clear. It’s one of those cases that will probably keep raising questions.
