Trump Administration Halts Wind Power Approvals, Affecting Approximately 165 Projects
On May 3, the Trump administration halted the development of onshore wind power projects in the United States, citing national security concerns. This marks a significant escalation in Trump’s fight against renewable energy. According to the American Clean Power Association and informed sources, the U.S. Department of Defense is putting on hold the approvals for about 165 onshore wind projects on private land. This includes wind farms awaiting final approval, some projects in mid-negotiation, and certain projects that typically do not require oversight from the Department of Defense. Among the affected projects, 35 have completed negotiations and are awaiting approval from the Department of Defense. Developers and consultants indicate that more projects are currently facing delays: 30 have completed negotiations and received verbal approval, pending written confirmation; about 50 projects are in the negotiation process; and another approximately 50 projects could have previously been declared risk-free. These wind farms could generate 30 million kilowatts, enough to power 15 million households. (Financial Times)
