Codex Launches 'Digital Pets': Essentially an Agent Status Overlay with AI Customization Support

According to monitoring by Beating, OpenAI has added the ‘Codex Pets’ feature to the Codex desktop application, allowing users to raise an animated pet within the interface. By typing /pet in the editor, users can summon the pet. While it appears to be a fun Easter egg, it actually serves as an agent status overlay: the pet hovers above other applications, displaying the current status of the Codex thread (running, waiting for input, under review) and a summary of progress in real-time, eliminating the need to repeatedly switch back to Codex to check the agent’s status. Several preset pets are built-in, and users can also utilize the hatch-pet skill to have the AI automatically generate a custom pet based on their project, complete with attributes such as species, personality, and rarity.
