I just learned about one of the most unexpected tragedies in recent times. Sunjay Kapur, the 53-year-old Indian billionaire and founder of Sona Comstar, died under completely absurd circumstances during a polo match in London. It’s simply unbelievable.

It all happened at one of the prestigious clubs—apparently the Guards Polo Club in the west of the capital. During the game, he accidentally swallowed a bee that stung him right in the throat. The sting triggered an acute allergic reaction—anaphylaxis—which led to heart failure. Kapur tried to stop, but he fell to the ground and lost consciousness. The medics on the field tried to save him, but, unfortunately, it was already too late.

What makes it especially strange is that this occurred just a few hours after Sunjay Kapur posted his condolences on X to the victims of the Air India crash near Ahmedabad. As if fate that day was cruel.

Kapur himself was a fairly prominent figure in the world. Born in the United States, raised in India, he became a pioneer in the production of electric vehicles and hybrids. Under his leadership, Sona Comstar turned into a global player, and he was called a visionary leader. His personal life was no less dramatic than his career. Sunjay Kapur was married three times: first to designer Nandita Mahtani from 1996 to 2000, then to Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016, and they had two children, Samira and Kian. His third marriage to the model Priya Sachdev began in 2017, and they have a son, Azarias. His second marriage was quite turbulent, with accusations involving various family issues, but over time the situation improved.

The news of Sunjay Kapur’s death shocked elite circles both in India and around the world. It was especially difficult for the British polo community. Suhail Seta, a close friend of Kapur, expressed his condolences; Sona Comstar itself also released a heartfelt statement. This really is one of the strangest and saddest stories I’ve heard in recent times.
