Been in crypto long enough to see people make the same mistakes over and over. If you're holding your own coins in a self-custody wallet, there's one thing that matters more than anything else — your seed phrase. Seriously, I can't stress this enough. That 12 or 24 word seed phrase? It's literally the master key to your entire portfolio. Lose it or let someone else see it, and you're done.

Here's the thing about a seed phrase that most people don't realize — it's not like a password you can reset. If you forget your login password, no problem, just hit 'forgot password'. But your seed phrase? That's different. Those words generate every single private key in your wallet. If your phone dies, your computer crashes, or you just lose access somehow, that seed phrase is the ONLY way to recover everything. It's your safety net.

Now, I've watched people lose money because they thought they were being smart but actually weren't. The mistakes are always the same. First mistake: taking screenshots of your seed phrase on your phone. Yeah, I know it seems convenient, but that photo could end up in your cloud storage, your gallery, or worse — some malware could grab it. Don't do it.

Second mistake: storing it digitally. Google Docs, Evernote, your desktop, Dropbox — doesn't matter how convenient it feels. Digital storage gets hacked. I've seen it happen. Cloud services are targets. Your seed phrase should never live anywhere near your computer or the internet.

Third one: sending it through messengers or email. Come on, Telegram, WhatsApp, email — these aren't encrypted the way you think. They can be intercepted. Anyone who tells you to send your seed phrase through these channels is either scamming you or doesn't understand security.

So what actually works? Real security is boring, but it's boring for a reason. Write it down. Pen and paper. Do it multiple times if you want. This gets your seed phrase completely out of the digital world. Then hide those copies in different places — your home safe, a bank vault, somewhere secure. And if you want to be extra paranoid (which honestly isn't paranoia in this space), get metal plates. Fire, water, time — none of it matters. Metal lasts.

The reality of Web3 is that you're your own bank. No customer service, no password reset button, no 'oops we got hacked' insurance. Just you and your seed phrase. That's freedom, but it's also responsibility. Your seed phrase is your fortress. How you protect it literally determines whether you keep your crypto or lose it all.

How are you storing yours? Drop your approach (but seriously, keep the details private 😉)
