Just watched the trailer for the Netflix documentary Bitconned and I have to say, it's intense. The film tells the story of one of the wildest crypto scams ever— and Ray Trapani is right in the middle of it. This guy is practically the main character of the whole disaster.

So, Ray Trapani has wanted to be a criminal since childhood, with no limits, no legality. In early 2024, the documentary was released, documenting his rise and fall at Centra Tech. Along with his partners Sohrab Sharma and Robert Farkas, Ray Trapani founded this company in 2017 at the height of the Bitcoin boom. They promised a debit card, then launched an ICO and raised $25 million from investors. Sounds like a classic move, but completely illegal.

The charges against Ray Trapani were severe— ten different counts, from fraud to money laundering to weapons possession. Ray Trapani pleaded guilty and had to pay back $2.6 million, plus serve time. His co-founders weren’t any better. Sharma even had to pay back over $37 million. The whole case is a textbook example of the risks in this space.

Director Bryan Storkel presents a pretty dark perspective on the crypto world in Bitconned—and honestly, rightfully so. The film came to Netflix starting January 2024, and Ray Trapani openly discusses his involvement. Interestingly, this isn’t even the only case. SafeMoon has also recently collapsed, and the SEC and Department of Justice are investigating for fraud. The U.S. even established a special task force against crypto fraud in 2023.

This all shows: the crypto space attracts scammers like a magnet, but the consequences are real. Ray Trapani and others are now part of a documentary that shows how quickly things can go downhill. If you invest in crypto, you should know stories like this— it’s a warning to be critical with every investment.
