I saw an interesting analysis on global living costs and I have to say the numbers are quite surprising. Almost all of the most expensive cities in the world are concentrated in Switzerland - Zurich, Geneva, and Basel completely dominate the rankings. Zurich is in first place with an index of 112.5, meaning it's about 12.5% more expensive than New York.
What strikes me is how Switzerland literally occupies the top six spots. Lausanne, Lugano, and Bern complete the Swiss dominance. The funny thing is that New York, which has always been the benchmark for urban costs, ranks only seventh with an index of 100 - precisely because it is the benchmark for the entire system.
In the USA, they don’t mess around either - Honolulu, San Francisco, and Seattle are all in the top 15. Boston and Washington D.C. are no less. Norway is also in the mix with Oslo, Trondheim, and Bergen regularly appearing among the most expensive cities in the world.
For Asia, it’s interesting to see Singapore, Tel Aviv, and Hong Kong as the main contenders. Singapore, in particular, ranks 12th globally with 85.3. The index calculation is pretty straightforward - they take housing, food, transportation, utilities, and entertainment prices, compare them with New York, and get the final number.
In Zurich, average monthly salaries range from 7,000 to 9,000 Swiss francs, which helps offset the very high costs. Geneva, on the other hand, is the second most expensive city, hosting many international organizations and having that luxury vibe that makes it practically prohibitive. Basel completes the Swiss trio in third place, mainly known for its pharmaceutical sector.
In short, if you want to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, Switzerland remains the number one choice. Europe dominates the overall ranking, while the rest of the world lags behind in extreme urban costs.
