I took a look at the latest ranking of the most expensive cities in the world, and honestly, Switzerland blows everyone away. Zurich, Geneva, Basel... it's crazy how the top six spots are all Swiss. Zurich comes in first with an index of 112.5—almost 13% more expensive than New York. After looking at the numbers, I wonder how people manage to live there, but well, Swiss salaries are also insane, averaging between 7,000 and 9,000 CHF per month.
What surprised me when looking at this list of the most expensive cities in the world is that Switzerland really monopolizes the top spots. Geneva with 111.4 and Basel with 110.7—it's crazy. In the United States, New York sets the benchmark at 100 points, but San Francisco (90.7), Seattle (86), and even Los Angeles (76.3) remain very expensive. Norway also does well with Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim in the top 25.
In Asia, Singapore (85.3) is the only one really climbing the list of the most expensive cities in the world, followed by Tel Aviv and Hong Kong. Honestly, when you see how much Swiss cities dominate this ranking, it really shows the standard of living and wealth in Switzerland compared to the rest of the world.
