I recently discovered a super practical need: often, I need a phone number temporarily for verification, such as testing overseas services or doing account experiments. Buying a new SIM card is simply not cost-effective. Later, I found out about services called SMS verification platforms, which basically provide virtual phone numbers to receive SMS messages.

I've personally encountered many pitfalls—some platforms can't receive verification codes at all, some have delays of half a day. After some trial and error, I found a few more reliable options. SMS-Activate works the best; usually, the verification code arrives within 10 seconds, and it covers many countries, making it especially suitable for cross-border testing. Super Cloud SMS mainly targets US and Chinese number ranges; in the US, codes arrive in about 10-30 seconds, in China, even faster at 5-20 seconds, though sometimes it gets congested during peak times. 5SIM has a well-designed interface, clear API documentation, and you can successfully receive codes when registering for Google, Twitter, and others.

If you're testing domestic applications, platforms like Xiaoniao SMS and Getsmscode are also decent, with responses generally within 5-15 seconds. The biggest advantage of using virtual phone numbers to receive SMS is privacy protection—you don't have to worry about harassment. But be aware that some numbers are shared, which can be flagged as risky.

The recommended approach is: for simple API testing, just pick any platform that supports API integration. If you need stable registration for overseas websites, it's best to prepare several virtual numbers as backups so you can switch immediately if SMS reception fails. Some platforms also support one-click number switching, which is especially useful. Also, don't go for the cheapest options blindly; choosing reputable, active platforms will save you a lot of trouble.
