I have been following Janice McAfee's story for years, and what struck me recently is the harsh reality of her situation. Two years after John McAfee's death in a prison in Barcelona, she is still seeking answers. What interests me is how a woman ends up doing odd jobs to survive after being married to someone who once worth more than 100 million dollars.
When you look at the numbers, it's surreal. John amassed this fortune by selling shares of his antivirus company in the 90s, but at the time of his death, estimates only spoke of 4 million dollars. In 2019, he was shouting from the rooftops that he had nothing, that he couldn't pay the 25 million dollar settlement demanded. Then he was arrested for tax evasion, with authorities claiming he earned 11 million by promoting cryptocurrencies. Janice McAfee explained to me that her husband left no will, no inheritance. No money. Nothing.
What really bothers me is what she says about the circumstances of his death. She talks every day with John before his death, and suddenly, an extradition order arrives. A few hours later, he is found dead in his cell. Janice doubts the official version of suicide. She has seen the prison videos. The doctors who attempted CPR without first removing the ligature around his neck. She has training as a nurse assistant, she knows that this is not normal.
What strikes me about Janice McAfee is her calmness in all this. She doesn't directly accuse anyone. She just says: give me an independent autopsy. 30,000 euros. She doesn't have that money. She does odd jobs in Spain, hidden, protected by the kindness of friends. She can't really move forward because Spanish authorities refuse to disclose the results of the official autopsy.
I met Janice and John in person at a blockchain conference in Malta in 2018. What struck me was her presence. While John drew everyone's attention, Janice was there, serene, protecting him. There was something zen about her, a kind of quiet strength. We became friends that day, and I have followed her journey since.
The Netflix documentary about John depicted him as a fugitive, but Janice says that's not the real story. Journalists sought sensationalism instead of understanding why a man like John was willing to become a fugitive. Why she followed him.
Today, Janice McAfee just wants one thing: to have John's body cremated according to his last wish. His body is still at the morgue in the prison. She doesn't ask for justice; she says justice no longer exists. She just wants to know what really happened. She wants to be able to move forward.
What remains with me is an image of resilience. A woman who has lost everything materially but refuses to lose the truth. Janice McAfee deserves answers. She deserves peace.
