Something caught my attention on social media today, and I can't stop thinking about it. James Howell's story is one of those cases that show how fragile the line is between being a billionaire and total loss.
So what happened? In 2009, when Bitcoin was practically worthless, the guy started mining it on his regular laptop. He mined 7,500 BTC. Back then, it was a pleasure, it didn't require special equipment. He quickly stopped, dismantled the laptop, and put the hard drive in a drawer, thinking he might need it someday. A typical human thing.
But four years later, in 2013, during a cleanup, something went wrong. James Howell accidentally threw away that hard drive thinking it was already useless equipment. Unfortunately, it ended up in a landfill in Newport, Wales. Not just any landfill — it's a massive dump the size of a football field, with waste reaching up to 15 meters deep in some places.
And here’s where the really crazy part begins. James Howell realized his mistake and started fighting with local authorities. He proposed a digging plan, promised safety and environmental protection. Nothing. The city council said no.
Years went by. Howell didn’t give up. He tried again. And again. He offered huge Bitcoin rewards for recovering the drive, sought funding from investors. The council firmly refused.
Now James Howell has a new plan — 12 months to search the landfill using X-ray scanners and artificial intelligence. Those 7,500 bitcoins? At the current price, that would be over $580 million. He might even get more before anything happens.
The coolest part? If he succeeds, he promised to give each of Newport’s 160,000 residents 50 pounds in Bitcoin and wants to turn the city into the UK’s first cryptocurrency hub. He even told Richard Hammond about it.
James Howell’s whole saga is basically a modern treasure hunt. But also a painful reminder — always back up your data, always store your digital assets securely. One moment of carelessness, and you could lose a fortune. We’re waiting for the next chapter of this story.
