Been looking into downsizing options and honestly the cost difference between tiny houses and RVs is wild. So I started digging into what people actually pay.
If you're looking at tiny houses in NSW or elsewhere, you're looking at anywhere from 30k to 70k upfront, sometimes way more for the fancy ones. But here's the thing - you also need land, which adds another layer of expense. Apparently farmland in Australia averages around certain price points depending on where you are. RVs though? You can grab a decent travel trailer for 10k or go all out with a motorhome for way more, and you skip the land cost entirely since you're just parking at campgrounds.
Once you're actually living in one, the monthly costs tell a different story. RV people seem to spend between 800 to 1750 a month depending on the type, and that includes campground fees and utilities. Tiny house costs are trickier because it depends if you own the land or rent a spot - renting a lot for a tiny house can be 250 to 1500 monthly. If you own outright, you're paying property taxes and utilities instead.
Maintenance-wise, both need regular upkeep. RVs run about 250 to 500 a year for maintenance, but repairs can get expensive fast. Tiny houses are similar to regular homes but smaller scale.
So basically - RVs give you flexibility and lower entry cost if you go the travel trailer route, but monthly fees add up. Tiny houses need bigger upfront investment and land costs, but if you own the property you might actually save money long-term. Really comes down to whether you want to keep moving around or settle down somewhere, just in a smaller space.
