So the State Department finally launched online passport renewal and I was hyped until I saw the price tag. How much for a new passport anyway? Still $130, same as always. At least you don't have to mail it in anymore or deal with printing photos, but honestly the cost part stings.
The catch is you've gotta be 25+, actually live in the US, and your passport has to be from a specific window (2009-2015 or between 9-15 years old depending on when you're applying). Also can't expedite it online, so you're looking at up to 8 weeks. They say processing is way faster now though - like a third of the time compared to last year.
If you're wondering how much for a new passport and you qualify, the process is pretty straightforward on MyTravelGov. Upload a digital photo, fill out your info, pay the $130 with a card. Done. I get that government websites usually suck but this one seems legit. Still feels weird paying that much just to renew something, but I guess it beats going to an office and waiting forever.
Anyone else trying to figure out how much for a new passport before booking their next trip? Might be worth doing it now before any other price changes kick in.
