Been looking at the defense tech space lately, and there's something interesting happening with autonomous systems. AeroVironment (AVAV) has quietly built a pretty solid moat in what's becoming a critical segment—loitering munitions and unmanned platforms.
Here's what caught my attention: the company's portfolio includes their Switchblade family, which combines reconnaissance and strike capabilities in a single platform. The 300 and 600 variants are compact enough to launch from the field, which matters a lot in modern combat scenarios where speed and flexibility are everything. They've also got experience with smaller systems like Raven and Puma that handle surveillance and intel missions.
What's driving this? Geopolitical tensions are up, defense budgets are expanding, and militaries worldwide are realizing that precision strike drones and loitering systems are more cost-effective than traditional alternatives. The demand curve here looks pretty favorable.
The numbers are interesting too. Consensus estimates show fiscal 2026 EPS growing 3.05% YoY, then jumping to 36.52% growth in 2027. Meanwhile, AVAV is trading at 4.97X forward price-to-sales versus the industry average of 12.74X—that's a notable discount. Over the past year, shares are up 67.7% compared to 48.6% for the broader industry.
That said, the stock currently carries a Zacks Rank of 5 (Strong Sell), so there's clearly some skepticism in the analyst community. The competitive landscape includes players like Kratos Defense with their autonomous platforms and Teledyne Technologies providing defense electronics and sensors for these systems.
The loitering munitions market is expanding fast, and AeroVironment's technical foundation in UAS gives them positioning to benefit from this trend. Whether the valuation discount reflects opportunity or risk is the real question here. Worth monitoring if you're tracking the defense tech space.
