So I just found out your dog can have watermelon and honestly it's a game changer for summer. Apparently it's totally safe, low in calories, and super hydrating which is perfect when it's hot out. Been giving my pup a few pieces and he's obsessed.
But here's the thing - you gotta be careful with prep. Can dogs have watermelon with seeds and rind? Nope, that's a no-go. Seeds can cause blockages and the rind is basically indigestible, so you have to remove both first. I cut mine into small bite-sized chunks to make it easier for him to eat and less risky for choking. Frozen pieces work too if you want to cool them down in the heat.
The benefits are legit - watermelon is packed with vitamins A, B6, and C plus potassium and antioxidants. It's like 92% water so it keeps them hydrated and helps with digestion. Even puppies can have watermelon if you introduce it slowly and watch for any weird reactions.
One thing though - don't go overboard. Can dogs have unlimited watermelon? Not really. Too much can upset their stomach from all the fluid and fiber, plus the sugar adds up. I stick to a few pieces as an occasional treat, not a daily thing. And obviously don't give them moldy or old watermelon you wouldn't eat yourself.
Frozen watermelon is probably my go-to move now. Keeps him entertained and cool. Just make sure the pieces are small enough and totally seed and rind free. Has anyone else tried this with their dog?
