Just looked at utility cost data from 2024 and honestly some of the state-by-state differences are wild. Hawaii's average monthly utility bill is sitting at $633 which is absolutely insane compared to Mississippi at $255. That's more than double. Makes sense for Hawaii with the isolation and energy import costs but still shocking to see it laid out like that. The Northeast is consistently pricey too - Connecticut, New Jersey, and Maine are all pushing $450+ per month on average. Meanwhile states like Georgia, Indiana, and Mississippi are staying under $300 for their average monthly utility bill. I was curious about this because I keep hearing people talk about cost of living differences but utility bills don't get as much attention as rent or groceries. Turns out utilities can swing by nearly $400 a month depending on where you live. That's real money. The data I found was from early 2024 so it's a couple years old now but the regional patterns probably haven't shifted that dramatically. If you're thinking about relocating or just wondering if you're getting gouged, might be worth checking what the average monthly utility bill actually looks like in different states. Could be a bigger factor than you realize when comparing places to move.
