Just did some digging into where you can actually afford to live without breaking the bank, and honestly, the findings are pretty eye-opening. Turns out Ohio is absolutely dominating when it comes to finding the most affordable state to live in right now – seven out of the top 15 cheapest and safest cities are there. That's wild.
I was looking at places like New Philadelphia (around $1,100 monthly mortgage), Berea, and Mount Vernon – all with solid livability scores and super low crime rates. What's interesting is that most of these affordable states to live in aren't just cheap on the surface; they actually have decent safety metrics too. New Ulm in Minnesota caught my eye as well, with a violent crime rate of just 0.29 per 1,000 and annual living costs around $36k.
The whole list spans from Texas to Maine, but if you're seriously looking for the most affordable state to live in with good neighborhoods, Ohio keeps popping up. San Elizario, Texas is another gem – barely over $36k annually with incredibly low crime. Even some of the pricier options on the list like Edwardsville, Illinois (livability score of 90) are still way more reasonable than what you'd pay in major metros.
The data's based on FBI crime stats, Census data, and housing prices from early 2025, so it's pretty solid. If affordability plus safety is what you're hunting for, seems like middle America has a lot more to offer than people realize.
