Just checked the prices on steak across different grocery stores and honestly the range is wild. I was curious where the cheapest place to buy meat actually is, so I did a little comparison shopping.
So here's what I found - if you're looking for the cheapest place to buy meat for a steak dinner, Aldi and Walmart are your best bets, but it depends on what cut you want. Aldi's sirloin was running around $7.99 a pound back when I looked this up, and their ribeye was $12.29. For filet mignon though, Walmart had the better deal at $21.82 per pound. The crazy part? At Walmart you could actually get a full sirloin dinner for four people - steak, potatoes, broccoli, butter, everything - for just $18.80. That's like $4.70 per person. I've seen McDonald's Happy Meals cost more than that.
Aldi came in second for the ribeye option at $5.83 per meal when you split it four ways. Whole Foods and Costco were way pricier, especially Costco where you're forced to buy in bulk. Like, their ribeye package was nearly $80 for four steaks. Target was somewhere in the middle but nothing special. The real surprise was how much butter prices varied - from $1.99 to almost $4 per pound depending on where you shopped, even for store brands.
If you're serious about finding the cheapest place to buy meat without breaking the bank, the strategy is pretty simple: hit Walmart for sirloin or filet, grab Aldi for ribeye, and don't sleep on comparing the sides because those add up. Potatoes stayed pretty consistent everywhere except Aldi charged more, and broccoli prices bounced around a lot. Honestly, shopping at multiple stores and planning ahead makes a real difference. I know it sounds like extra work but saving $10-15 on a family dinner is worth it.
