Just found out dogs can actually eat cucumber and it's pretty good for them? Like I was wondering if I could give my pup some as a snack and turns out it's totally safe. Apparently it's super low calorie, mostly water, and has potassium for muscle stuff. Vets say it's actually a solid treat option, especially if your dog needs to watch their weight.
Obviously gotta be smart about it though - moderation is the thing. Treats including cucumber should only be like 10% of their daily calories. You're supposed to wash it, slice it into bite-sized pieces (so they don't choke), and some dogs can't digest the seeds so maybe remove those. My vet mentioned that smaller dogs get a couple slices a few times a week, bigger ones can have more but still keep it reasonable.
Also don't give them pickled cucumbers because apparently the brine has onions and garlic which are bad for dogs. But raw cucumber? That's the way to go. Pretty wild that this simple thing from the grocery store can be such a healthy snack. Anyone else giving their dog cucumber or am I late to this?
