Been looking into heating options for my place and realized I needed to figure out is gas heat cheaper than electric – turns out it's more complicated than I thought.

So here's what I found: If you're just looking at upfront costs, electric heating wins pretty easily. You're looking at maybe $2,000 to $8,000 installed for an electric system (heat pump, baseboard, whatever), while gas systems run $3,800 to $10,000. That's a pretty big difference when you're already dropping money on a new furnace. Plus permits and inspections add another $200-$500 for electric versus $250-$1,500 for gas. Honestly, if budget is tight right now, electric looks way more appealing.

But here's where it gets interesting – the actual cost of running these things is where gas heat cheaper shows up in your monthly bills. Gas systems cost around $400-$700 a year to operate, while electric runs $1,900-$3,800 annually. That's a massive difference over time.

So the real question is: how long are you staying? If you're only there a few years, go electric and save on installation. But if you're planning to stick around, gas heating actually makes more financial sense because those lower operating costs add up fast enough to offset the higher initial investment.

Also worth noting – gas needs more maintenance, electric is safer, and these days more people care about the environmental side of things too. Just depends on what matters most to you.
